Old Soldier Field Stadium - Early Construction in Black & White

from 45.00
This iconic picture of Soldier Field was taken during the early stages of construction. The colonnaded structure was designed to complement the neoclassical style of the nearby Field Museum of Natural History, but the correlation was lost when the Park District Building was added on the north end. the design recalls ancient Greek and Roman arenas, with Doric columns rising 100 feet above the arena.

It is fascinating that the playing field is nothing more than mounds of dirt at the time. You can also see men dressed in suits and vests as they put in their hard earned day of work plowing through land on horse and cart. In the background, the scaffolding is still in place as the finishing touches are put on the large famous pillars.
